Qualities of a reputable animal rescue or shelter:

  1. Clean and healthy facility that cares for the physical and emotional needs of their pets.
  2. A staff that loves and values each and every pet – even those who need medical attention.
  3. Responsible control mechanisms that maintains manageable pet population on site.
  4. Ethical and written philosophy and policy on behavior or quality of life issues that may endanger a pets health.
  5. Written policies and procedures for the adoption process.  If the site is reputable, they will want to make sure you are matched with the right pet.  A responsible adoption policy will ensure a placement in a forever home.
  6. Best home for every pet.  Not the best pet for you.  A good shelter should care primarily about the health and well-being of the pet first.  Not the wishes of the person or family wanting to adopt a pet.
  7. Ask questions – visit twice – make sure your commitment is real.  This is a lifetime commitment to a pet.  They may be with you for up to 15 years!

This is a great and  compassionate cause – pets that are matched well love well!
